The works on paper that I am currently making instill my belief in the mantra: Paintings come from painting. Ideas and directions, ways of tweaking work can materialize from the act of making. Continuing explorations of pattern, the idea of repetition, a woven or wicker effect with more variety and possibilities. This effect I am after gets transferred, revised, improved with each painting. That is the beauty of Work on Paper, a cost effective way to take chances, explore, solve problems, All while generating work.
I juggle different subjects from abstract to more representational in my practice which is not really new for me. In the past I’ve judged or questioned this approach while today I embrace it as positive and what keeps me questioning. Recently I had some dialog with an artist on social, He was concerned about recent work not being in keeping with his usual work. He asked for my thoughts and my recommendation was that he let others judge and make what he feels compelled to make. I told him that I saw a thread in the work, which is all beautiful by the way. He accepted my comments with the sincerity they were offered. My point is that I am heeding my own advice and making what I feel compelled to make and seeing a thread!
