ARTIST STATEMENT
Paintings come from painting is an idea I live by. This thought has helped me when questioning the work, believing that nothing is a waste of time. My inspiration is from my surroundings, nature, art history and contemporary art. It is helpful when ending my daily session to know my first move upon returning. I also have chores which segue into painting. The task of documentation is also inspiration. Seeing the work edited or in groups opens possibilities or directions.
My current oil on canvas practice is a series of seemingly unrelated paintings. The through-line may be scale, application and palette. After years of feeling that I must paint one thing I’ve accepted my varied vision. This new group has a few themes: Imagined Landscapes, Pattern, Geometric compositions, Abstract and Representational works.
For my acrylic works on paper practice, the following approaches are utilized: Memory based abstract landscapes, Abstract mark making and repetition in pattern, stencils. One such stencil, ‘Flower motif in Pattern’ consists of four petals around a center dot, repeating petal to petal in grid formation 8/27/24
BIO
Mark Perry was born and raised in Providence, RI. He began making drawings before he was ten years old and started painting by twenty. As a ten year old it supplied positive energy, seeing improvement with continued work. Although self-taught, Perry attended Evening Division, Portraiture and Life Drawing at Rhode Island School of Design. During the decade of his twenties he worked as an Electrical Draftsman for an Architectural Firm in Providence.
In 1989, at the age of twenty-nine he moved to NYC. Through the 1990’s drawing at The Spring St. Studio and The Society of Illustrator’s while working as a studio painter in the Garment District for six years. In 1996 he left this field to be a full time artist.
Perry divides his time between Springs, NY and Miami Beach, Fl. While in NY making larger oil on canvas paintings and in Miami making smaller acrylic works on paper.
